The folding stretcher, although not new to the twentieth century, was redesigned to resolve the problem of transporting the oversized paintings of the 1950s and 1960s. The earliest known reference to folding stretchers was by Jean Rane, an artist of the Spanish court, who recommended in1735 the use of hinged stretchers for removal of painting from Royal Alcazar palace in Madrid after a fire on Christmas Eve 1734. In America in 1817, the artist John Vanderlyn wrote to Leonard Jarvis and recommended the use of a folding stretcher for an oversized painting in a travelling exhibition. The reasons cited are economy of cost due to the reduced size of the travelling case as well as eliminating the need to remove the painting from its strainer to roll and restretch the painting at every venue, which as the artist explained ‘is very troublesome and very injuries to the canvas all about its edge’.

Folding stretchers have often been noted on full-length British portraits of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, although they appear to be nineteenth-century replacement stretchers. In this report, the Folding Stretcher Industry value in 2016 and expected value by the end of 2022 along growth between 2016 and 2022 is mentioned. Various Folding Stretcher industry leading players are studied with respect to their company profile, product portfolio, capacity, price, cost and revenue.

Simple stretchers are the most rudimentary type. They are lightweight and portable, made of canvas or other synthetic material suspended between two poles or tubular aluminum frame. Many are stored as disaster supplies and are often former military equipment.

The folding stretcher, also known as a top deck or collapsible stretcher, is similar in design to the simple stretcher, but features one or more hinged points of articulation to allow the stretcher to be collapsed into a more compact form for easier handling or storage. Some models may even allow the patient to sit upright in a Fowler's or Semi-Fowler's position.
